Greener Travel Accommodations Come at a Price
In a EY Parthenon sustainability report on global travel accommodations, it was estimated that 243 billion euros worth of investment in the industry would be required to abate carbon emissions by 48 megatons of CO2. According to the study conducted in partnership with Booking.com, travel accommodations in the Asia Pacific region represented almost half of the total carbon reduction potential but it will cost an average of 4,750 euros per room to realize this potential. While this cost seems steep, there is a silver lining on the road to net zero – most of the larger investment costs associated with making accommodation more sustainable can be attributed to cost-saving measures in the long run.
