Friday the 13th
The Most Lucrative Trips to Camp Crystal Lake
Friday the 13th is not only a day that supposedly brings bad luck, it's also the name of one of the most successful horror film franchises of all time, ranking fifth on IMDB in terms of revenue not adjusted for inflation. As our chart based on Box Office Mojo data shows, the first installment brought in the most money at domestic box offices out of all entries when taking inflation into account.
The 1980 film starring Betsy Palmer and up-and-coming actors Adrienne King and Kevin Bacon grossed an inflation-adjusted $20.4 million on the opening weekend alone and ended its run of 237 days with about 140 million in today's U.S. dollars.
Coming in second on the list based on Box Office Mojo data and Statista calculations is Freddy vs. Jason from 2003. The crossover movie featured not only Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th as a villain but also Freddy Krueger from the similarly iconic Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Out of the eight highest-grossing franchise entries, six were released in the 1980s, the latest being Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason lives from 1986, which raked in an inflation-adjusted $51.4 million.
When not taking inflation into account, the horror movie franchises with the biggest domestic box office success are Alien with $515.9 million, Saw with $415.9 million and Jaws with $408 million.
