Parcel Pick-up
Chinese Favor Self-Service Stations for Parcel Pick-up
Data from the Statista Global Consumer Survey shows that parcel pick-up stations are gaining popularity as a convenient option to receive packages in some markets. Especially in China – where e-commerce is booming – a majority of respondents said they had used or tried to use parcel pick-up stations in the past 12 months before the survey.
Countries with many urban consumers were more likely to favor the use of these stations as they offer easy round-the-clock pick-up of packages and might be located in closer vicinity to people’s houses than the post office or designated stores that traditionally offer parcel pick-up. In some instances, online vendors like Amazon also offer a discount for the use of pick-up station compared to standard delivery.
In the six-country survey, Swedes were the most avid adopters behind the Chinese at 36 percent use in the past year. Other than having items delivered directly to one’s home, Swedes favored traditional post office pick-up most.
Germany was ranked third at 19 percent parcel station use. In the country, picking up your parcel from neighbors was the most popular besides home delivery.
Use of the stations was lower in the U.S. at 13 percent. In the country, home delivery still reigned supreme, with many Americans indicating that they had designated spots for parcels to be left at their homes. A higher rural population and more single-family homes in the country also mean that parcels can often simply be left at someone’s doorstep.
