Then & Now
Turning The Other Cheek
Be it the rise of K-beauty or chasing runway model looks, cosmetic surgery is generally seen as an almost purely female dominion. While data from the American Society Of Plastic Surgeons backs up this notion for the United States at least – 92 percent of procedures in 2020 were undertaken on female clients – cosmetic adjustments in men have increased dramatically in some areas when compared to the year 2000.
As our chart shows, buttock lift procedures in U.S. males increased from 48 in 2000 to 357 in 2020. While the numbers themselves aren't big, the percentage increase is. With a growth rate of 616 percent, reshaping men's behinds has become the second-fasted growing type of procedure overall. Only work on the second type of cheek saw a bigger increase from 2000 to 2020: Cheek implant or malar augmentation surgery grew by a whopping 1616 percent to a total of 28,638 procedures in men, making it the third most common type of cosmetic surgical procedure performed on males in 2020. Only nose reshaping and eyelid surgery sported bigger numbers with 65,121 and 45,806 procedures undertaken, respectively.
Overall, approximately 2.3 million cosmetical surgeries were performed in the U.S. in 2020, an increase of 22 percent when compared to 20 years prior. Nose reshaping, eyelid surgery and face lifts were the top 3 procedures undertaken last year. When it comes to the country with the most invasive and non-invasive cosmetic procedures, the United States came in first in 2019 with roughly four million, followed by Brazil with 2.6 million and Japan with 1.5 million according to data from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
