Free Britney

In a saga which was thrown into sharp focus upon the broadcast of the documentary 'Framing Britney Spears' in February, the public campaign to 'Free Britney' has been making waves in 2021. As well as focussing on the media's treatment of the pop star, the show also covered the conservatorship the singer has been under since 2008 - meaning she is not in control of large parts of her life, with a particularly strong grip over her financial affairs. The grounds for this were concerns about Britney Spears' mental health and was implemented and overseen by her father, Jamie Spears.

In July, Britney gave her first personal statement in court, shedding light on how the conservatorship has negatively affected her life and freedoms and requesting that it be terminated. While this was rejected, on September 7, Jamie Spears announced that he had filed a request for the arrangement to be revoked, his lawyers stating: "As Mr Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter. If Ms Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr Spears believes that she should get that chance.” The campaign to free Britney will no doubt continue to gather steam until the conservatorship is ended once and for all.
