50% of Chinese Play More Than 6 Hours Per Week

As of September 1st, minors in China will only be allowed three hours of online video game time per week. This move follows on the heels of state media decrying video games as "spiritual opium" earlier this month. Chinese adults are exempt from these regulations – which is why China will likely stay on top of the list of the countries spending the most time in front of gaming consoles, PCs or smartphones per week.

As our chart indicates, over 50 percent of Chinese participants in the Statista Global Consumer Survey spend more than six hours each week playing video games, while over a quarter are gaming for longer than ten hours per week. The US are not far behind, with 44 percent playing six hours or more every week. Surprisingly, the third and fourth biggest gaming markets in the world, Japan and South Korea, lag behind in screen time. Only 17 percent of Japanese and 24 percent of South Korean respondents said they allot more than six hours for video games each week.

China not only boasts the strictest regulations and the longest playing times of major gaming markets worldwide, it also generates the most revenue. According to estimates for 2020, the People's Republic was responsible for roughly 41 billion US dollars in revenue with video games.
