Where Cyclists Are Going Places

Bicycles are synonymous with the Netherlands like windmills and wooden clogs. But other than the latter reminders of a time long gone, bicycles as a mode of transportation are actually ubiquitous in the European country. More than 50 percent of the Dutch respondents interviewed for the Statista Consumer Insights in 2023 said they used their own bicycle two or more times a week in order to get to their destination.

The Netherlands is an ideal country for cycling, not only because of the mild climate and flat landscape, but also because it provides an optimal infrastructure of cycle paths in towns and cities as well as throughout the countryside.

Among the countries selected for the graph, Germany, Poland, India and Brazil also stand out in terms of the love of cycling for transportation, with 34-36 percent in each country traveling on their bicycle regularly. South Korea and the United States, on the other hand, are among the countries most averse to this practice, but are also two countries which provide very little infrastructure for cyclists. Only 12 percent and 16 percent of those interviewed in South Korea and the U.S., respectively, used their bike for transport regularly.
