Detroit Comes First For Poverty in the United States
Due to its automobile industry, Detroit was once America's wealthiest city. These days, however, it is the nation's poorest with 42.3 percent of its population living below the poverty line. Since it filed for bankruptcy last July, Detroit has struggled with water shortages, a high crime rate and crippling unemployment. Flint, which is also in Michigan, is struggling with immense problems of its own - 38.9 percent of Flint's resident live in conditions of poverty. Syracuse in New York is the third poorest city in the United States with over a third of its people living in poverty.
