World Cup Humiliations Are a Rare Event

Germany trashed Brazil 7-1 at the Estádio Mineirão in Belo Horizonte to reach the World Cup final. Nobody could have predicted that devastating scoreline, leaving Brazilian players and fans devasted. However, it wasn't the worst humiliation in World Cup history. That happened back in 1982 when Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1. The Hungarians also handed out a 9-0 mauling to South Korea in 1954 while Yugoslavia beat Zaire by the same scoreline twenty years later. Generally, though, World Cup humiliations are a rare event. Germany's highest win was in 2002 when they put eight goals past Saudi Arabia in the group stages of the World Cup in Japan and South Korea.
