How LGBT Americans Identify

A new Gallup poll has found that the percentage of the American population identifying as LGBT climbed to 5.6 percent in 2020, up from 4.5 percent the last time the research was conducted in 2017. Gallup asked respondents identifying as LGBT about their identities in greater detail than in previous years, allowing for a more precise overview of sexual orientation and sense of gender.

The research found that 54.6 percent of LGBT adults in the U.S. identify as bisexual while 24.5 percent say they are gay. 11.7 percent identify as lesbian while 11.3 percent state they are transgender. A further 3.3 percent of those polled have a different non-heterosexual preference or use a different term to describe their sexual orientation such as queer or same-gender-loving.
