Climate change

Young Generation Focused on Climate

Climate change is quickly growing as a key issue for voters across the country, evident in policy shifts of traditionally moderate Democrat politicians as well as rapid transitions to clean, alternative fuels from energy companies. New data solidifies the fact that this push in climate change awareness is driven by the sustainability goals of younger generations.

In data collected by Deloitte in their latest Global Millennial Survey for 2020, a large number of Millennial and Gen Z respondents said they're focused on key environmental concerns within their own lives. When it comes to single-plastic use, 64 percent of Millennials and 55 percent of Gen Z’ers said they take action in reducing their use. Another 52 percent and 42 percent said they actively buy more organic, local food, while 50 percent and 41 percent of Millennials and Gen Z’ers, respectively, said they've stopped or are reducing the purchase of fast fashion.

According to Bloomberg, TikTok stars and YouTube gamers are part of a new wave of young influencers promoting climate change awareness. Millions of kids and adults from younger generations tune in to live gamer streams and watch TikTok videos every day, and in-between games and other content, creators with hundreds of thousands of followers are speaking positively about climate-friendly actions.
