2020 Election

The U.S. Military Has An Increasingly Unfavorable View Of Trump

The Military Times has released a new poll showing that support for President Trump among active-duty service members is declining. The research was conducted between July 27 and August 10 of this year among 1,018 respondents. It found that 46.1 percent had a favorable opinion of Trump ahead of the 2016 election and that declined to 37.8 percent by August 2020. 49.9 percent of the military now hold an unfavorable opinion of Trump, of which 7.9 percent view him very unfavorably and 42 percent view him generally unfavorably.

Even though the president does have strong support in some corners of the military with a quarter of respondents viewing him very favorably this August, a higher proportion of those polled say they will cast their vote for Joe Biden this November. The Republican Party has long considered the military a key element of its supporter base and the high levels of unfavorability recorded in the poll are unprecedented for a GOP president.
