Biden Fundraising Surges Alongside Polls
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden secured over $11 million for his campaign after appearing with former President Barack Obama during a live fundraiser video. That sum, along with a record $81 million in fundraising for the month of May, has helped propel the campaign’s finances high enough to compete closely against Donald Trump’s fundraising figures.
According to OpenSecrets, Biden’s campaign has officially raised over $210 million over the course of his candidacy. While those numbers are still short of Trump’s reported $287 million raised, Biden’s campaign has been seeing large increases in donations each month since the beginning of the year.
In January, the campaign brought in just under $9 million in total donations. By March, that number had skyrocketed to just under $50 million, and by April, it was at an all-time high of around $60 million.
Early in Biden’s candidacy, many donations could be traced back to large individual and business donors, which made up the bulk of Biden’s cash flow. Large donations still make up the majority of the campaign’s finances, but small individual donations of under $200 have grown to around 40 percent of all donations.
Biden's growth in campaign donations comes as he continues to push ahead of Trump in the polls. Recent June polls show Biden leading Trump by an average of 11 points - the largest margin yet during the election.
