Californians Love Their Wine

Wine consumption in the U.S. continues to increase each year, and now every state in the union has a commercial wine industry. However, some states are more well-known for a higher quality of wine than others – and are also more prolific wine drinkers.

According to the National Institutes of Health in the U.S., Californians – known for their significant production of world-class wine – drink nearly double the amount of wine as the next-closest state. At 155.5 million gallons of wine drank, California drank more combined than Florida at 72.7 million gallons and New York at 65.8 million gallons in 2018.

Other states that are surprisingly big into wine drinking are Texas, with just over 60 million gallons of wine drank in 2018. While those in California and New York may look down upon Texas-made wine, many wine connoisseurs following the growth in Texas have high hopes for vino in the Lone Star state.

Not surprisingly, many of the top wine drinking states are along the East Coast, where the grape beverage first originated in the country from European settlers. While the best wine is most likely created along the West Coast, Eastern U.S. residents still have the highest affinity for all types of wine.
