Maharashtra Counts One Third of COVID-19 Deaths in India
On Friday, India surpassed 10 million coronavirus cases in a country of 1.3 billion. After the United States' 18 million cases, India has the second-most affected country in the world. Out of all cases, almost 2 million were registered in the state of Maharashtra, where the capital Mumbai lies. The share of deaths in the state is even higher at around 48,800 out of 146,000 - the equivalent of 34 percent
While Maharashtra is the hardest hit, its share of cases and deaths has decreased over time. Outbreak in Andhra Pradesh and Kanataka have been growing fast and now makes up 9 percent each of cases 8 percent/5 percent of deaths, respectively. Tamil Nadu was the fifth-most affected state, according to the the Ministry of Health.
