When Are Chinese People Planning to Resume Traveling?

According to a survey by McKinsey & Company, Chinese people are reluctant to travel again after the coronavirus pandemic and are also not planning to venture too far on their first leisure trip. The question is of importance not only to those Chinese with itchy feet but also to those depending on the business that Chinese tourists bring. They have been, after all, the nation known to spend the most money abroad as tourists.

Of course, major restrictions on travel remain worldwide, but Chinese consumers seemed to be seeing travel as a glass half full at the moment. 43 percent said they would only travel again between October and December, with 30 percent picking the Golden Week holiday (Oct 1-8) as the expected time of their first post-coronavirus trip. Another 30 percent were pushing leisure travel back to 2021 or beyond.

55 percent of respondents said they would stay within China on their first trip, which is in line with the high percentage of domestic tourism in the country. Only 8 percent said they would venture overseas.
