The emergence of online video streaming services like Hulu and Netflix is having a detrimental effect on U.S. cable subscriptions. People availing of these services are far more likely to "cut the cord". 6.5 percent of American households terminated their cable subscriptions in 2013, a figure that rose to 18.1 percent in households subscribing to Hulu or Netflix.
