UK car manufacturing continues to suffer through 2020
New car manufacturing figures for the UK released today by SMMT highlight the continued trouble experienced by the industry throughout the coronavirus crisis and ongoing Brexit uncertainty. In October last year the country produced a little under 135 thousand cars. This year that figure sunk to just 110 thousand representing a fall of 18 percent.
As this infographic shows, the total for the year to date is even more suppressed in comparison to the same period in 2019 - 743 thousand cars rolling off the production line equating to a fall of 34 percent.
Commenting on the figures Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: "These figures are yet more bad news for an industry battered by Covid, Brexit and, now, the unprecedented challenge of a complete shift to electrified vehicles in under a decade. While the sector has demonstrated its resilience, we need the right conditions to remain competitive both as a manufacturing nation and a progressive market.
