COVID-19: Spain

As the COVID-19 disease spreads outside of China, countries like Italy, Spain and the United States are leading the world in new coronavirus cases.

Coronavirus cases in Spain began to climb at the end of February, as other European countries also began to see substantial rises. While Spain continues to see similar rises in case numbers compared to other European countries, many believe the country is more prepared to handle the influx of hospitalizations than Italy and the U.S. Recently, a Spanish official stated they were prepared for over 80 percent of people in the capital city of Madrid to contract the virus at some point.

Total cases of COVID-19 have quickly increased in Spain, with a peak of 188,093 as of April 17. Daily new cases have dropped quickly since their peak of 8,271 on March 26, falling to 3,145 new cases reported on April 17. The death toll in the country has skyrocketed to 19,613 as of April 17, the third-most in the world behind Italy and the U.S. Overall, the recovery rate is climbing, and was reported at 79.5 percent of all cases in Spain as of April 17.
