Six months ago, on March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization officially declared the global COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. According to the Johns Hopkins University’s pandemic tracker, the global case count surpassed 28 million on Thursday as the wait for a vaccine continues.

As the following chart shows, the majority of confirmed COVID-19 patients, 18.99 million or 67 percent, have recovered from the disease, while 910,000 people have died so far. According to Johns Hopkins University, 8.26 million cases were active as of September 10, meaning that the outcome had yet to be determined.

With daily new cases hovering around 250,000 for more than a month now, the pandemic shows no signs of retreat. Meanwhile several vaccine candidates have reached phase 3 trials by now, fueling hopes of a possible arrival in early 2021.
