Women in the House
March 1 marks the start of Women's History Month, and what better way to kick off the celebration than by taking a look at the women who have served in the United States House of Representatives longest?
With 37 years in her position, Representative Marcy Kaptur holds the record for being the longest-serving member of the House. She broke the previous record set by Representative Edith Nourse Rogers, who served 35 years, 2 months and 14 days from 1925 to 1960, as noted by NBC News.
Things have changed since Kaptur took her seat in the House. “In those days, when a woman went to the floor to speak, it took almost a decade before they would even listen,” she told NBC News in 2018 when she broke the record.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has been a representative for 33 years. In January 2019, she became the first woman in U.S. history to hold this position.
