Do Brits support Harry & Meghan's "step back"?
Last Wednesday Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, announced their intention to step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent. The couple said they are planning to split their time between the United Kingdom and North America. The queen and senior members of the royal family are understood to have been "hurt" by their announcement and an emergency summit is taking place in Sandringham to resolve the crisis.
The couple feel they have been the subject of abuse and harassment by several of Britain's tabloids, some of which has had both sexist and racist undertones. That, and their desire to protect their son, are thought to be the primary reasons behind their decision to distance themselves from the monarchy.
A divided British public is nothing new but on this seemingly contentious issue, the people are firmly behind the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. A snap YouGov poll of 1,320 British adults found that 45 percent support their decision while just over a quarter are opposed. 29 percent of those polled said they don't know if their move is the correct one.
