UK 2019

An election battle drawn on Brexit lines

While Labour tried to campaign for this election on a wide range of planned out policies, there was really only ever going to be one issue which decided the result. As the dust settles there will be plenty of analysis conducted into how Labour allowed the Tories to win their largest majority since 1987, but one reason is already clear.

The Conservatives' simple and repeated ad nauseum slogan of 'get Brexit done' got straight to the heart of what this election was about and was rewarded with an astoundingly strong result. Also in the Tories' advantage was that. Despite a short-lived challenge from the Brexit Party, they were the only real pro-Brexit choice for voters in Great Britain. For voters looking to bring about a second referendum or stop Brexit altogether, the choice was much wider, splintering the vote and diffusing any meaningful attack from the other side of the Brexit battle lines.

As this infographic shows though, parties whose stance was either anti-Brexit or pro-second referendum actually won a majority of the votes - 51.2 percent. The parties looking to 'get Brexit done' - based either on conviction or the desire to honour the referendum - garnered just 46.8 percent. That though is of course irrelevant in practical terms and something which will be made very clear in the coming weeks as Boris Johnson and the Conservatives press on with their now large parliamentary majority.
