Is The U.S. Facing A French Fry Shortage?
The U.S. experienced unusually cold and wet weather conditions during the potato harvest season which has led to a significant shortage of the crop. That, together with increasing demand for french fries, could lead to the U.S. actually experiencing a shortage of fries. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, potato production is set to fall 6.1 percent this year and that has sent processors scrambling to find new sources to satisfy the demand for french fries.
Canada has also been affected by the extreme weather and potato harvests in Manitoba and Alberta have experienced a noticeable impact on their harvests. Despite the developments and the possibility of shortages occurring, it isn't necessarily bad news for lovers of fast food. Major chains such as McDonald's and Burger King generally have fixed contracts lasting for the year which will not result inprice increases.
