“Avengers: Endgame” was the biggest movie of the year in the U.S., grossing $858 million at the domestic box office. The film went on to beat “Avatar” to become the biggest movie of all time, setting a box office record of $2.79 billion worldwide. Previously, “Avatar” held the record with $2.789 billion.

Released April 26, “Avengers: Endgame” set even more records. After raking in $1.2 billion when it first opened, “Avengers: Endgame” had the highest opening weekend gross worldwide, according to Paste magazine. It also had widest domestic release after it played in 4,662 theaters.

While U.S. moviegoers love Marvel flicks, two other Disney productions found their way in to the top three films of 2019. A more “realistic” version of the “The Lion King,” which included the voices of Beyoncé, Donald Glover and Seth Rogen, was the second biggest movie of the year, grossing $544 million at the domestic box office. “Toy Story 4,” which fans have been waiting for since “Toy Story 3” debuted in 2010, rounded out the top three with a domestic gross of $434 million.
