Sharp Fall in Hong Kong Tourism

Protests, and the state's reaction to them throughout 2019 led to Hong Kong reporting that the Chinese special administrative region had slipped into recession, largely due to the economic effects of the protests and the subsequent fall in tourism. As this infographic shows, visitor figures show a stark drop in visitors from China and the rest of the world, really taking a hold from June onwards. Taking stock at the end of the year, and despite an uptick, the December figure for total visitors was just 3.2 million. In January there had been 6.8 million, signifying a drop of over 50 percent.
