Then & Now The Decline Of Christianity In the U.S.

Pew Research have published a major study into the religious landscape of the United States, finding that it is continuing to change quickly. In particular, it found that the decline of Christianity is continuing at a rapid pace with the share of adults identifying as Christian down 12 percentage points over the past decade. The study also included an overview of the long-running General Social Survey (GSS), a project of the independent research organization NORC at the University of Chicago.

That survey forms a more long-term overview of the state of christianity in the U.S. and it also confirms its rapid decline. Back in the late 1970s, 90 percent of American adults identified as Christians and that declined to 80 percent by the early 2000s. The decline has continued and by the late 2010s, the share of U.S. adults identifying as Christian stood at 71 percent. Back in the late 1970s, only seven percent of the population said they had "no religion" and the GSS found that the share went up to 22 percent by the late 2010s.
