The most common cancers in England

In rich countries, more people die from cancer than from cardiovascular disease, at least among those under 70 years of age. This is the finding of a study published in the journal 'Lancet'. According to the researchers, the means of preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases have continued to improve and are therefore declining considerably as a cause of death. In a few years' time, cancer will probably also be the most common cause of death worldwide.

As this chart shows, in 2017, there were 149 thousand new cases among women and 156 thousand new cases among men. In 30.7 percent of the cases, breast cancer was diagnosed in female patients, with the prostate being the most frequently affected for men, with 26.3 percent. Lung and colorectal are in the top 4 for both sexes.
