How Americans Feel About Trump's Syria Withdrawal

The situation in northern Syria has taken another turn after it emerged that beleaguered Kurds have made a deal to hand several key cities over to Damascus in exchange for assistance from the Syrian military. The prospect of fighting between the Syrian army and Turkish forces are heightening fears about the security of an estimated 11,000 suspected-IS fighters in detention across the region.

President Trump's decision to abandon America's Kurdish allies and effectively greenlight a Turkish cross-border offensive has been intensely criticized, even by some of his closest allies within the Republican party. When it comes to public opinion about the move, most Americans haven't heard anough to make their minds up, according to a recent CBS News Survey conducted by YouGov.

Still, more Americans disaprove of the withdrawal than approve of it. Among Democrats, 57 percent say they feel it was wrong to remove U.S. troops from the region. Despite criticism from leading Republicans, only 16 percent of GOP supporters think the withdrawal was the wrong call.
