Refugee Camps In Northern Syria
Turkey has launched its military offensive in Northern Syria which is threatening Kurdish fighters backed by the United States. The fate of up to 10,000 suspected-IS prisoners held by Kurdish militias is unclear ahead of a possible expansion of the Turkish operation. There's also a risk to tens of thousands of displaced people in camps near the border and some of them are thought to house IS suspects' families.
The following map was compiled with UNOCHA data reported by the BBC and it shows the key locations of camps for displaced people along the border. Al-Hol is the largest of them with an estimated 68,600 people, followed by Ain Issa with just under 13,000 and Areesheh with 8,800. Families of suspected IS members are present and being detained at al-Hol, Roj and Ain Issa.
