Poll: Majority In Northern Ireland Support Unification
A new poll published by Lord Ashcroft has found that a slight majority of people in Northern Ireland would vote for unification with the Republic of Ireland if a border poll was held tomorrow. The research comes after similar polling at the start of August found that a majority now want a new poll on independence in Scotland.
In Northern Ireland, 45 percent of those surveyed said they would vote to stay in the UK while 46 percent would vote to leave and join the Republic of Ireland. Excluding don't know responses and people who wouldn't vote, this breaks down to 51 to 49 percent for unification. Unsurprisingly, the results are clear-cut among nationalists and unionists in the North. 98 percent of the former would vote for Northern Ireland to join the Republic of Ireland while 95 percent of the latter would vote to remain part of the UK.
