Johnson plans to suspend marathon parliamentary session
Boris Johnson's decision to suspend parliament has resulted in a furious backlash, sparking protests across the United Kingdom. While the prime minister's supporters are arguing the five-week suspension is necessary to develop new legislation, his opponents have lambasted the move as an affront to democracy.
The UK's parliament is already in its longest-running session since the end of the Second World War, primarily due to the complexity of the Brexit process. The current one has been a marathon 337 days, lasting for more than three years. Earlier this year, it beat the 2010-12 session which was previously the longest since the Civil War. Therefore, it also holds the record as the longest session since the union of England and Scotland in 1707.
