Hurling
The Counties With The Most All-Ireland Hurling Titles
Across much of the world, the Irish sport of hurling remains relatively unknown. It does turn up in popular culture from time to time with Jason Statham describing it as "a cross between hockey and murder" in the opening scene of the 2011 film "Blitz". Believed to have prehistoric origins and thought to have been played for 4,000 years, the sport is a big deal in Ireland. This can be seen by the All-Ireland hurling final which is played out in Croke Park in Dublin every year in front of 82,300 spectators.
The 2019 final was played on Sunday, the 132nd event of its kind, between Tipperary and Kilkenny. In the end, Tipperary were emphatic winners, beating their opponents by 3-24 to 0-20. Despite their loss, Kilkenny still have the most championship wins of any county in Ireland with 36, their most recent occurring in 2015. Cork are in second place with 30 while Tipperary now have 28. Last year's champions, Limerick, are much further back with 8 All-Ireland wins in their history. Interestingly, London GAA is among the winners. The reason for their presence on the list is victory in the 1901 final when the All Ireland and All-Britain champions were paired together.
