Exonerations
The U.S. States With The Most Exonerations
The Neal Davis Law Firm recently published an analysis of state-level exonerations in the United States. The company states that "in the past 30 years, numerous injustices have led to more than 21,000 years lost in prison for persons who later were exonerated". Altogether, just under 2,500 people were exonerated between 1989 and 2019.
Texas was the state with the most exonerations during that time frame with 363 in total. 49 of those were for murder while 40 were for sexual assault. Illinois had the second highest number of exonerations over the past 30 years (303) while New York came third (281). New Hampshire was at the opposite end of the scale with just one exoneration during the same period.
