Prices Rise Faster for Rural Consumers in India
The rural population in India is seeing their cost of living rise faster than the urban population, according to the Indian government consumer price index.
Inflation rising quickly has beleaguered India recently. Real wage growth in rural areas has been slowing down significantly, hinting at higher expenses for rural workers due to the inflation burden, among others.
Wholesale prices surpassed a 5 percent monthly rise in October of 2018 but have recently been back at 2.5 percent year-on-year. This led to a rise in consumer prices as well, with food items exhibiting a slower increase opposite non-food, as pointed out by the Hindustan Times. Especially farmers, another rural population, suffered because of low prices for food, which led to protests in the past year.
