What U.S. Parents Want for Mother's and Father's Day

Father’s Day is this Sunday, a holiday in the United States dedicated to celebrating dads. The day was first officially honored in Washington state on June 19, 1910. President Nixon officially made the third Sunday in June a national holiday amid his reelection campaign. Between the first festivities at the beginning of the 20th century and its official initiation as a national holiday, people for over 60 years celebrated the day with varying levels of officialness.

While Americans are estimated to spend nearly $1 billion on Father's Day gifts, about one in five fathers surveyed by YouGov reported not wanting anything for the holiday. Cards and electronics were the other top two items dads reported wanting for the day. On the other hand, mothers were more likely to want flowers, certainly a hallmark of their own day.
