Americans Unwilling to Give Up Their Holidays

Memorial Day Weekend is right around the corner, a federal U.S. holiday set aside for commemorating fallen soldiers. Students and people working in the U.S. get the last Monday of May off, marking the unofficial start of summer.

While many people living outside of the U.S. may not know of the holiday, according to a recent YouGov survey it is regarded as one of the core holidays for Americans. Asked whether America should eliminate holidays New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving were the holidays Americans were least likely to send to the chopping block.

Overall about 50 percent of respondents did not think any of the holidays on the below chart should be eliminated from the calendar, a reasonable sentiment given how American vacation time stacks up to other countries.
