U.S. Iran Tensions

Who Are America's Greatest Enemies?

With tensions between the United States and Iran mounting, the Pentagon has presented a military plan to the president's top national security aides, which calls for deploying 120,000 troops to the Middle East. The plan was first reported by the New York Times and comes after the deployment of a U.S. carrier strike group, B-52 heavy bombers and a patriot missile system to the Persian Gulf.

U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton has long advocated for U.S. military action against Iran and he has been the driving force behind imposing unilateral sanctions to strangle and eradicate Tehran's oil exports. While Bolton has been especially hawkish on Iran, does the American public share his views? At the end of April, YouGov conducted a poll to find out whether Americans consider certain countries friends or enemies.

North Korea is America's greatest foe according to the U.S. public with 50 percent of those polled labeling the isolated state an enemy. Iran comes second with 42 percent of Americans calling it an enemy, 30 percent calling it unfriendly and only 5 percent calling it friendly.
