European Parliamentary elections: the cost to the UK

If the UK has not found an acceptable way to leave the European Union by 22 May this year, it will be forced to take part in European Parliamentary elections. This, assuming the country does finally find a way to implement Brexit, is an overtly futile task and one which, as our infographic shows, is not without financial burden. According to a government analysis, the last elections in 2014 cost the country almost £109 million. Chief among the outlays were the fees paid to Royal Mail to to send out the candidates' mailings - coming in at £40.6 million.
