The cost of a WG room in Germany

For many students planning on moving to Germany for the summer semester, there will be one type of accommodation on offer and that's the classic shared flat arrangement or "Wohngemeinscahft" to give it its German title. Most students of course will be living on a budget and taking that into account, accommodation can vary hugely in price depending on the city. In the former East Germany, prices are the lowest, averaging just €258 and €271 per month for a room in a shared flat in Magdeburg and Jena respectively.

Unsurprisingly, prices go up hugely in the big cities. A room in a shared flat averages €450 in Hamburg, Cologne and Konstanz while it can cost €500 in Frankfurt. Spare a thought for those studying in Munich, however. A spot in a Wohngemeinschaft in Bavaria's biggest city will set its tenant back over €600 in rent every month.
