Biggest Box Office Openings for Female-Led Films
At its premier weekend, “Captain Marvel” hit the ground running. The origin story of the extraterrestrial Kree warrior is Marvel Studios first female-led superhero film, and it had the biggest box office opening of any female-led movie. Brie Larson as Captain Marvel wowed audiences, amid a sluggish start to the year for the movie industry.
“Captain Marvel’s” debut weekend brought in 455 million in worldwide box office sales. “Beauty and the Beast,” starring Emma Watson, had the second biggest worldwide box office weekend for any female-led film, bringing in 357 million. Disney, which owns Marvel Studios, beat out their rival DC, which is owned by Warner Brothers. Captain Marvel brought in double of what DC’s film-led superhero film, “Wonder Woman” made in its first opening weekend.
Among other notable records and firsts the movie has taken, Fandango reported that Captain Marvel had become the biggest advanced-ticket seller, beating out “Avengers: Infinity Wars” and “Black Panther.”
