Detroit is America’s Most Dangerous City

For the fifth year running, Detroit tops the Forbes list of the most dangerous cities in the United States. Even though violent crime actually fell in Detroit last year, it still experienced 386 murders. The overall violent crime rate in the debt-ravaged city stands at 2,123 per 100,000 residents.

Oakland in California comes second on the list with a crime rate more than three times the national average. Since 1993, the rate of violent crime has risen 16 percent – it now stands at 1,993 per 100,000 residents.

St. Louis, Missouri, rounds off the top three with 1,777 instances of violent crime per 100,000 residents. Memphis and Stockton complete the top five with violent crime rates of 1,750 and 1,548 per 100,000 respectively.
