Record-Breaking? How the Jan 30 Cold Snap Measured up

Despite being touted as record-breaking, the ongoing arctic blast across the Midwestern United States has yet to break any major all-time temperature record lows. Yet, several cities across the Midwest surpassed their daily record for Jan 30, some by a long stretch. Others were inching up to their all-time low temperatures, according to data by the National Weather Service and The Weather Channel.

Even though it didn’t break major records yet, the polar vortex cold snap isn`t any less dangerous. The National Weather Service warns of the risk of hypothermia and frostbite to exposed skin in under 10 minutes. The arctic blast had claimed 12 lives across the Midwest by Thursday morning, which included people exposed to the cold as well as people killed in snow-related traffic incidents.
