Migration

Escape from Venezuela

According to The Brookings Institution, the Venezuelan migration crisis is becoming the largest and most underfunded in modern history - soon to surpass the scale of the Syrian crisis. Venezuela's problems are extensive and varied, with political, social and economic crises making life in the country very difficult. As Brookings puts it: "The conditions Venezuelans face daily are not much different than those in an active war zone." As our infographic shows, this has led to a huge increase in migration out of the country. In 2015, there were almost 700,000 Venezuelans living in other countries. Fast forward to December 2019 and this figure has risen to 4.8 million.
