The UK Granted Almost 179,000 Citizenship in 2011

According to new figures released by Eurostat, the European Union granted 783,100 people citizenship in 2011. Altogether, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy and Germany accounted for almost three quarters of all citizenships granted across the 27 EU member states.

The United Kingdom granted the most citizenships with 188,800. France and Spain rounded off the top three with 114,600 each. However, in terms of citizens acquired per 1,000 inhabitants, Luxembourg is Europe’s leader with 6.6. Sweden came second with 3.8 and the United Kingdom came third with 2.8.
