Chinese Internet Use Quintupled Since Google Entered China

The number of internet users in China is now over five times what it was when Google first tried to enter the market in 2006. Google initially had to leave the Chinese market due to their inability to fully comply with Chinese censorship laws.

The Intercept reported that in 2017 Google began exploring the option of reentering the Chinese market by creating and testing a search engine that would fully comply with Chinese censorship laws. CEO Sundar Pichai had to come before Congress yesterday to answer questions on those allegations along with a variety of other questions relating to search engine bias and tracking user data. The number of internet users in China has been steadily growing as the digital divide between cities and rural areas narrows.
