E-commerce firms banking heavily on Diwali sales
As sweets, presents and wishes are exchanged across India for Deepavali, e-commerce companies light up with increased sales. The five-day festival is expected to bring in about 20 million shoppers, twice more than in 2016. Flipkart and Amazon will be the biggest winners of the season according to RedSeer Consulting. This is despite retail companies being asked not to sell fireworks online by the Supreme Court for health and environmental reasons.
Deepavali, to many, signifies the return of Lord Rama and his wife Sita after 14 years in exile as mentioned in the Ramayana and according to the Mahabharata, the return of the Pandava brothers after 12 years. However different the details might be, it is the collective celebration of good over evil and light over darkness, wishing wealth and prosperity with gifts that now increasingly benefit India’s e-commerce market.
