Mobile India: increasing reliance on Jio

Commercially launched in September 2016, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited or Jio (literally meaning “live” in Hindi) has conquered about 20 percent of India’s wireless market, getting a massive boost from collaborating with the government’s Digital India initiative. After acquiring 16 million subscribers in its first month, Jio stands at 130 million subscribers as of October 2017.

The company has teamed with Google to create affordable 4G handsets which will only run on the Jio network. Additionally, the face of arguably the biggest star of the Indian film industry, Shah Rukh Khan, is the mobile network’s brand ambassador, reaching a wider demographic across the country.
