U.S. Death Penalty Support Continues to Fall

According to a Gallup poll, support for the death penalty in the United States has fallen to its lowest level in over 40 years. Traditionally, American support for the death penalty has remained strong, especially during the mid 1990s when it reached 80 percent.

Today, support has fallen to 60 percent. Gallup cites death penalty moratoriums in several states as a possible reason for today’s low level of support. Indeed, 18 states have completely abolished death penalty laws with six doing so since 2006.
