Streaming Services
Streaming Services Specialize in Certain Content
Netflix still produces more shows than any other streaming service, numbering over 500 between current and upcoming shows. Other services, like Amazon, HBO Go, and Hulu, can not quite match that level of content, producing 177, 163, and 87 shows respectively.
While Netflix changed the streaming and licensing landscape for TV shows, its new competitors are angling for different production strategies to carve out niches for themselves. Amazon churns out more dramas than any other streaming service, while Hulu puts a lot more emphasis in producing comedies. Around 40 percent of Amazon’s shows are dramas, while about a quarter of Hulu’s shows are dramas. Despite this, Hulu is putting more emphasis on comedies with that genre making up 35 percent of upcoming shows. Netflix and Amazon split their production almost evenly between comedies, dramas, and science fiction shows.
